AI Was Supposed to Freeze Hiring. Alphabet, CSX, and Booz Allen Are Staffing Back Up Anyway.
For roughly the past year and a half, the working assumption at most large employers was straightforward: smaller workforces plus AI would cover the growth. The Wall Street Journal now reports a real reversal. Alphabet, CSX, Booz Allen Hamilton, ServiceNow, and Snap-on have all told investors they’re increasing hiring in specific areas, and executives are citing the actual costs and limitations of AI, not just growth targets, as the reason human headcount needs to grow again.
The nuance matters more than the headline. This isn’t “AI didn’t work, so we’re going back to how things were.” New OpenAI-backed research found that 44 percent of occupation-specific ChatGPT requests involved work traditionally associated with a different profession entirely, meaning employees are increasingly using AI to work across functions, not to replace whole job categories. Separately, Intuit QuickBooks’ latest AI Impact Report found small businesses using AI are four times more likely to say it helped them hire than say it led to cuts.
What This Actually Means for Leaders
The story isn’t a simple AI-versus-humans binary, and treating it that way is exactly the mistake this data argues against. What’s actually happening is more specific: AI is expanding what individual employees can cover, which increases the value of people who can direct and integrate that expanded capability, rather than eliminating the need for people at all.
That’s the framing several of these executives used directly, and it’s a genuinely useful correction for any organization still operating on the earlier assumption. The practical question for leadership teams right now isn’t whether to hire through the AI transition, it’s which roles benefit most from someone who can direct AI capability across functions rather than stay confined to one narrow lane.
