Amplify Speakers · Event Planner FAQ
Can We Book a Celebrity Speaker Directly, Without a Bureau?
Technically, sometimes. In practice, going direct usually costs planners more time, more risk, and often more money than it saves. Here's what actually happens when you try to skip the bureau, and why the ones who've done it once rarely try again.
Why "Going Direct" Rarely Works the Way People Expect
Most in-demand speakers are represented, and for good reason. A celebrity or well-known name typically has a manager or agent handling their calendar, fee negotiations, and travel logistics specifically so they can focus on their actual work rather than fielding inbound requests. Contacting them "directly" usually just means reaching that same representation through a different door, often more slowly.
There is no bureau markup to eliminate. This is the detail that surprises most planners: Amplify doesn't add a fee on top of what a speaker charges. We're compensated by the speaker as part of the booking. Going direct doesn't unlock a lower price, because there was never a markup baked in to begin with.
What you lose going direct is leverage and speed. A bureau that regularly books event planners' events, and that has an ongoing relationship with a speaker's team, tends to get faster responses and more flexibility than a first-time individual inquiry. We also handle the contract, logistics, and any last-minute issues, which otherwise falls entirely on you.
The one case where direct makes sense
If you already have a genuine personal or professional relationship with a speaker, reaching out yourself is entirely reasonable. Where direct outreach tends to go wrong is when planners assume a public email or social media DM will reach a busy, in-demand name faster than working through established representation.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does using a bureau cost more than booking direct? No. The speaker's fee is the same either way. Amplify is compensated by the speaker, not by an added planner-side fee.
Can I still request a specific speaker by name through Amplify?Yes. If a speaker isn't on our roster, we can often still facilitate the introduction and handle logistics on your behalf.
Why is a bureau usually faster than reaching out myself? An established relationship with a speaker's team tends to get a quicker, more serious response than a cold outreach from an individual planner.
