Sales Rep Turnover Jumped From 22% to 36% in a Single Year. 84% Missed Quota.
New 2026 benchmarking data from Ebsta and Salesforce paints a rough picture for sales organizations. Rep turnover climbed from 22 percent to 36 percent in the past year, a jump researchers tie directly to burnout among the performers already carrying the bulk of their company’s revenue targets. Meanwhile, Salesforce’s own State of Sales data found 84 percent of reps missed quota last year.
This isn’t happening because teams stopped trying. The same data shows 92 percent of sales teams plan to increase their AI investment in 2026, with the large majority already using some form of it daily. More tools, more AI, and still a widening gap between what’s expected and what’s actually closing.
Why More Tools Hasn’t Meant Less Pressure
Researchers are calling 2026 the year of the “productivity paradox” in sales: more technology exists than ever, and quota attainment is still a massive hurdle for the average rep. Ebsta’s separate dataset, spanning 4.2 million opportunities, found that just 17 percent of reps generate 81 percent of revenue, an 8.9x performance gap between top and average performers.
That gap doesn’t close itself with another dashboard. When a small fraction of reps are covering most of the number, the pressure concentrates rather than spreads, and burnout follows the pressure. Sales cycles have also stretched, up 33 percent to an average of 6.5 months, which means reps are carrying that pressure for longer before a deal ever closes.
