Speaker Spotlight
Most Resilience Keynotes Rest on One Comeback Story. His Rests on a Hundred Interviews and a Career in Performance Science.

Toby Brooks — Performance Scientist · Host of the Global Top-5 Podcast Becoming UnDone · Author of 20+ Books · Former Pro Athletic Trainer and Strength Coach · Waco, Texas
The reinvention keynote is a well-worn form, and its weakness is always the same. One person’s story is a sample size of one, and an audience can reasonably wonder whether it generalizes.
Toby Brooks has interviewed more than a hundred people about theirs. Becoming UnDone is built entirely on accounts of people who took a serious hit and rebuilt, which means his material comes from a body of cases rather than a single arc.
Behind that sits an actual research career: more than 20 books, over 40 peer-reviewed articles, and two decades in higher education and human performance at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Baylor.
He Came Up Through Locker Rooms, Not Lecture Halls
Before the academic career, Toby was a professional athletic trainer and strength coach with clinical stops that included the Oakland Raiders and USA Baseball. He was in the room where performance is measured daily and where nobody is impressed by theory.
That line is the through-line of his work, and the reason his material tends to land with sceptical audiences. Treating resilience as trainable rather than innate turns it into a subject a room can act on, which is a different proposition from being told to be tougher.
It also explains his unusual audience range. He has delivered hundreds of presentations across education, corporate, athletic and faith-based audiences, which is four registers most speakers cannot switch between.
Three Ways to Program Him
Becoming Undone is the signature keynote, drawn from the podcast and his own story of identity loss and burnout. Its premise is that the unravelling comes before the comeback and is the part everyone skips, which makes it a strong fit for an organization mid-restructure or a workforce that has taken a rough couple of years.
The Fear Factor argues that playing it safe is the riskiest available move, and works through how fear of judgment, of failure and of success quietly shapes decisions. Good for sales teams, leadership groups and anyone stalling on a decision they have already made privately.
Built to Rise is the performance science session, fusing what he studied academically with what he saw in locker rooms. This is the one for an athletic department, a student-athlete audience or a corporate group that responds better to evidence than to exhortation.
Where He Fits
Toby works well for conferences and all-staff events dealing with change or burnout, campus and student audiences, athletic programs, and faith-based gatherings. His industry placements lean toward manufacturing, agriculture and education, which are audiences that tend to prefer plain delivery over polish.
