Speaker Spotlight
She Was Held Hostage in Somalia for 460 Days. At a Conference of 6,000, She Was Voted the Best of More Than 40 Speakers.

Amanda Lindhout — New York Times Bestselling Author · 500+ Keynotes in 34 Countries · Creator of the Four Quadrants of Resilience
In August 2008, Amanda Lindhout was working as a journalist outside Mogadishu when she was kidnapped. She was held hostage for 460 days.
Getting out was not the end of the story. What followed was years of living with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, at points barely able to leave her home, and a long, deliberate recovery that she has since made the actual subject of her work.
Her memoir about the captivity, A House in the Sky, became a New York Times bestseller and a #1 international bestseller. But the framework she teaches from stages today came out of the decade after it.
The Story Is Not the Keynote
Plenty of speakers have survived something. Far fewer have done the work of turning it into something an audience can actually use on a Tuesday afternoon.
Amanda spent more than a decade researching the mindset that converts adversity into growth, and built the result into a framework she calls the Four Quadrants of Resilience. It is the spine of every keynote she gives, and it is deliberately simple enough that a room of 900 people can carry it out the door.
She has taught it to more than 500 audiences in 34 countries, including Google, Mastercard, Deloitte, PwC, Marriott, Forbes, Shell, the NHL, TD Bank, RBC, Scotiabank, YPO and Entrepreneurs’ Organization.
The Part Most Speakers Leave Out
The captivity is what gets her booked. The recovery is what makes her unusual.
Amanda has been open about the years afterward: the isolation, the inability to engage with the world, the point at which leaving her house was the hard part of the day. She pursued every avenue available to her, conventional and otherwise, and came out the other side. Today she is healthy and the mother of a young daughter.
That arc is why she works for audiences other resilience speakers cannot reach. Healthcare systems, first responders, mental health organizations and frontline teams do not need to be told to push through. They need someone who can speak from inside the experience of being depleted and describe, concretely, what getting back actually took.
She has delivered that message for St. Joseph’s Health Care, University Hospital Kingston Foundation, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Sierra Tucson and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
Why Planners Keep Booking Her
Her story is covered everywhere: a New York Times Magazine cover story, two full episodes of Dateline NBC, O: The Oprah Magazine, Vogue, The Today Show and the Los Angeles Times. That gets attention on a program.
What gets her rebooked is what happens in the room.
The 6,000-attendee figure comes from the Australasian Real Estate Conference, where founder John McGrath reported she came out on top of a field of more than forty. A producer with twenty-five years of booking experience described a room so transfixed you could hear a pin drop, followed by a huge standing ovation. A YPO chapter reported the first standing ovation in the history of its events.
Four Keynotes, Four Different Rooms
The Adversity Unlock is the leadership session. Built for executive teams and organizations mid-change, it teaches a three-part method for turning setbacks into an advantage and makes the case for leading with optimism when it is hardest.
Redefining Resilience is the broadest of the four and the usual choice for annual conferences and all-employee meetings. It reframes resilience as a learnable set of skills rather than a personality trait, which is the part audiences tend to find genuinely freeing.
460 Days in Somalia is the full story told at length, for general sessions and any room that needs to be moved rather than merely informed.
Beyond Survival is the clinical and mental health session, focused on complex PTSD and long-term recovery, and built for audiences who work in or around that reality every day.
All four are available in person and virtually, and Amanda works with your team ahead of the event to tailor the message to your theme and industry. Full descriptions and takeaways are on her speaker profile.
