About Amanda Lindhout

Amanda Lindhout is one of the most credible voices on resilience working today. In 2008, while reporting as a journalist in Somalia, she was kidnapped and held hostage for 460 days. What she learned inside that experience, and across the decade of rebuilding that followed, became a framework she now teaches to audiences worldwide.

Her memoir A House in the Sky became a New York Times bestseller and a #1 international bestseller, and has stayed a Top 10 title since its release. It was named a New York Times Notable Book, a Globe and Mail Top 100 Best Canadian Nonfiction title, an Amazon Editor's Pick for Best Memoir and a Heather's Pick. Elizabeth Gilbert called it one of the most powerfully written books she had ever read.

Amanda did not go straight from captivity to a stage. She spent years navigating complex PTSD, at points barely able to leave her home, and pursued every avenue of recovery available to her. Out of that work came more than a decade of research into the mindset that turns adversity into growth, and the framework she calls the Four Quadrants of Resilience: gratitude, connection, presence and purpose.

She has since delivered more than 500 keynotes in 34 countries for organizations including Google, Mastercard, Deloitte, PwC, Marriott, Forbes, Shell, the NHL, TD Bank, RBC, Scotiabank, YPO and Entrepreneurs' Organization. Her story has been told in a New York Times Magazine cover story, two full episodes of Dateline NBC, O: The Oprah Magazine, Vogue, The Today Show and the Los Angeles Times.

What makes her presentations work is not what happened to her. It is what she does with it. Amanda is a genuinely gifted storyteller who holds a room from the first minute, then hands the audience something practical: a method for finding the lesson inside a hard experience, a way to train attention toward what is still working, and a case for connection as the thing that makes resilience durable rather than exhausting.

Planners consistently report the same outcomes. Rooms go silent. People cry. Standing ovations happen where they normally do not. At one 6,000-attendee conference she was ranked the #1 speaker out of more than 40 in the post-event survey. Audiences leave uplifted rather than heavy, which is the hard part of this subject and the reason she is booked so often for it.

Amanda is available for in-person and virtual keynotes worldwide and travels from Victoria, Canada.

Reframing challenges as assets to navigate change and lead with optimism. Built for leadership teams, executive summits, C-suite audiences and organizations in the middle of significant change.

The best leaders understand that adversity refines character and pushes people to grow in directions they would not have chosen. The ones who can identify, articulate and apply the lessons buried inside a hard experience gain a real edge.

Amanda draws on the 460 days she spent as a hostage in Somalia, where she trained herself to look for growth in circumstances that offered almost none, and on the framework she built in the years after her release. Leaders leave with practical tools for the pressures they are actually carrying, and with a case for building a culture anchored in human connection.

Program Takeaways

  • Apply a three-part method for turning setbacks into an advantage: identify, articulate, apply
  • Use the Four Quadrants of Resilience: gratitude, connection, presence and purpose
  • Lead with optimism in the moments when it is hardest and matters most
  • Build a culture where people feel connected, and are therefore more resilient

How to unlock your inner strength to be your best. Amanda's broadest keynote. Ideal for annual conferences, all-employee meetings, association events and whole organizations navigating relentless change.

Resilience is not about pushing through or toughing it out. Amanda redefines it as a set of skills anyone can learn and practice, starting with the mindset you choose each day and where you train your attention.

Her Four Quadrants of Resilience give every person in the room a framework they can start using immediately, at work and at home. And her central point lands fast with teams: resilience deepens through connection, which means the room gets further together than any one person gets alone.

Program Takeaways

  • Leave with a shared language and framework for resilience the whole team can carry into daily work
  • Experience genuine connection across roles, departments and levels
  • Understand what resilience actually is and how it gets built
  • Train attention toward what is still working well, even under pressure

How an extraordinary mindset can get us through anything. The full story, told at length. Ideal for conference general sessions, opening or closing keynotes, and any room that needs to be moved.

A famine reporting trip turned into an unimaginable struggle for survival. Amanda's story made headlines around the world, but the keynote is not a retelling of the headlines.

Through edge-of-your-seat storytelling, unexpected humor and hard-won insight, she takes audiences on an emotional journey and lands it somewhere hopeful. The values that carried her through, hard work, integrity, perseverance, community and the determination to keep moving when circumstances are outside your control, are the values that carry ordinary people through ordinary hard things.

Program Takeaways

  • Share an experience of genuine connection that brings the room together
  • Turn adversity into something useful: lessons learned, wisdom gained, a legacy built
  • Use the Four Quadrants of Resilience: gratitude, connection, presence and purpose
  • Stay grounded and focused when pressure and uncertainty are high

Healing, growth, and the power of the human spirit. Built for mental health professionals, clinical audiences, healthcare and frontline workforces, first responders and wellbeing programming.

This keynote is about the story that came after the captivity: the years of living with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, and the full recovery from it.

Amanda can speak to that experience from the inside. What it feels like to be disconnected, isolated and at times unable to engage with the world at all. At her lowest point she could barely leave her home. What followed was years of committed work, and the discovery that recovery is not a single breakthrough but a daily choice: to let difficult feelings move through rather than suppressing them, and to keep turning attention toward what is still good. Today she is healthy, vibrant and the mother of a young daughter. She is direct evidence that profound healing is possible.

Program Takeaways

  • Hear a firsthand account of living with complex PTSD and recovering from it
  • Understand what long-term recovery actually requires as a daily commitment
  • Learn to let difficult emotions move through instead of pushing them down
  • Apply the Four Quadrants of Resilience as a lived framework for lasting wellbeing

Amanda customizes every keynote to your theme and audience, and is also available for fireside chats, moderated Q&A sessions, book signings and virtual programs.
