He Was Handed the Job of Closing a Car Plant. In Its Final Eight Months It Became One of the Best Quality Plants General Motors Had.

Jamie Getgood - International Keynote Speaker on Culture and Change Management

Jamie Getgood — Australian Leader of the Year · Led the GM Holden Closure · CEO of People Avenue · Adelaide, California and Manila

When a plant announces it is closing, the expected sequence is well understood. Engagement falls, the good people leave first, quality slides, and everyone counts down to the last day.

General Motors Holden did the opposite. Three thousand employees knew their jobs were ending, and over the final eight months of operation the plant moved from a bottom quartile performer to one of the best quality plants in the General Motors system.

Jamie Getgood led that transition, focusing on culture, people leadership and employee engagement rather than on managing a wind-down. He was named Australian Leader of the Year at the Australian Excellence Awards, and he now speaks internationally on what that experience taught him.

Why That Result Is the Most Useful Case Study in Change

Most change management content is drawn from transformations where the upside was obvious. People were asked to adapt in exchange for something better. Holden offered nothing at the end of it, which strips out the usual incentive and leaves only leadership behavior as the variable.

Three thousand people faced the end of their jobs, and trust and performance went up.

That makes it an unusually clean demonstration. What Jamie takes from it is specific: transparency about what is actually happening, dignity in how people are treated, decisions grounded in data rather than optics, and clarity in place of control. He is direct that leading honestly without destroying hope is the hard part, and that it is a skill rather than a personality trait.

For any organization in a merger, a restructure, a site consolidation or a genuinely uncertain stretch, that is a more credible source than a case study where everything worked out.

The Contrarian Session for Executive Teams

Cohesion Before Safety is the one to look at if the audience is a senior leadership team, because it argues against the current consensus.

Psychological safety has become the standard answer for team dysfunction. Jamie’s position is that a lot of organizations have adopted the language without building the underlying thing, and that cohesion comes first. His test for a leadership team is whether it can disagree hard and address problems directly while staying united, which is different from a team that is comfortable and therefore avoids the argument entirely.

The session works on why unresolved tension quietly destroys performance, and how to build relational strength without letting accountability slip. It is aimed at CEOs and executive teams rather than general audiences.

The Offshore Session Almost Nobody Else Offers

Jamie now runs People Avenue, an offshore marketing, sales and recruitment agency with embedded teams across Australia, the Philippines and the United States. That gives him a keynote most rosters do not have: Building High Performing Offshore Teams.

His argument is that most companies offshore for cost and that this is precisely why most offshore models fail inside twelve months. He covers building trust across borders and time zones, the leadership rhythms that create real ownership rather than task completion, and how to protect culture while reducing cost.

For staffing, recruiting and founder audiences, this is a rare and specific session, and it is grounded in an operation he is currently running rather than in advisory work.

What Clients and Peers Say

The managing director for APAC at Reward Gateway, who has booked him across several events, described him as a favorite with HR and leadership audiences for his authentic storytelling, and as someone whose impact she has also seen firsthand in consulting and transformation work.

Equipped Group Australia said he took the time upfront to understand their business, goals and the skill level of their participants, and that the delivery was dynamic and immediately applicable. They would invite him back.

The third reference is from Daniel Murray, himself an international keynote speaker and author, who said Jamie blew the room away with the stories and the tools. Speakers are a hard audience to impress.

Seven Sessions, and How to Choose

Leading Through Uncertainty is the Holden keynote and the best general choice for an organization in transition.

Cohesion Before Safety is the executive session. People First. Performance Always. and The Relational Advantage both make the commercial case for relational leadership, the second with a focus on global and distributed teams.

Building High Performing Offshore Teams is for CEOs, founders and staffing leaders scaling offshore.

Leading Without Losing Yourself addresses leadership burnout from his own experience of it, and treats personal sustainability as a commercial issue rather than a wellness one. Unbreakable is the personal resilience keynote, tracing a line from a serious childhood injury through later setbacks, and suits conferences and leadership forums looking for a closing story with substance.
