Honolulu and Oahu hold the large majority of the state's population, nearly all of its convention capacity, the main military commands, the health systems and state government. For anything statewide, this is the default.
Maui is the strongest resort conference market outside Oahu, with substantial capability for incentive and executive programmes.
Hawaii Island has resort capacity on the Kona side, a scientific and observatory community, and a large agricultural sector.
Kauai serves smaller retreats and executive programmes, with limited inventory that commits early.
The neighbour islands collectively matter more than visiting planners assume. If your membership spans them, an Oahu venue is the fairest choice, and it is worth funding travel rather than quietly excluding a third of your people.
The Industries That Shape the Room

Cost of living, and why it belongs in your programme
Hawaii has among the highest living costs in the United States. The practical result is that many local families cannot afford to live where they work, and a significant number of young people leave for the mainland because the arithmetic does not work.
That is not background colour, it is the central business problem for most employers here. If your topic is recruitment, retention or engagement, address it directly. A talk about culture that does not acknowledge housing and cost will sound like it was written for somewhere with different numbers, because it was.
Equally, treat it as a business problem rather than a lament. The people in your room are managing it, not symbolising it.
Protocol, practically
Many events here open with a blessing or a chant, and it is a normal and expected part of a professional programme rather than a ceremonial extra. Brief your speaker so they know what is happening, when to stand, and that it is received with attention rather than applause. Your host organisation will tell you what is appropriate if you ask, and asking is welcome.
One more instruction for the speaker. A visitor is a visitor. Do not adopt local phrases, do not claim affinity based on holidays, and do not open with an impression of belonging. Being straightforwardly a guest who has prepared properly lands far better than any attempt at insider status.
Travel and timing
Flights from the mainland are long and arrive tired. Get the speaker in with a full day to adjust, and be honest with yourself about what a morning keynote feels like to someone whose body clock is five or six hours ahead.
For neighbour island attendees, first sessions that start early are effectively exclusionary, since they require a flight before dawn. A mid-morning start materially improves attendance.
