Sales Kickoff Planning
91% of Revenue Leaders Expect Higher Quotas in 2027. Only 8% Say AI Has Lifted Quota Attainment. Build the SKO Around That Gap.
Boston Consulting Group has published The 2027 Revenue Agenda, built on a survey of 398 chief revenue officers, sales leaders, chief commercial officers and revenue operations leaders at large companies across 23 countries. Their plans for next year pull every growth lever at once: 65% expect sales headcount to grow, 72% expect sales and revenue budgets to rise, and 91% expect quotas or productivity requirements per seller to go up.
AI is expected to make those numbers possible. So far it mostly hasn’t. Ninety percent of leaders report meaningful AI use in sales workflows, but only 13% name better win rates as a top area of measurable AI impact, and just 8% name higher quota attainment. That gap is the most useful planning input a 2027 sales kickoff could have.
Where AI Is Paying Off, and Where It Isn’t
When BCG asked where AI had delivered measurable impact, the returns clustered in operations rather than in front of customers.
Only 6% of organizations have reached autonomous, end-to-end AI deployment. Most use is concentrated in data entry, CRM updates and account research, the parts of the job with clear inputs and outputs. The customer-facing, judgment-heavy parts of selling are where adoption is lowest, and they are also where deals are won.
The Buyer Has Changed More Than the Seller
The more interesting finding for an SKO agenda is about customers. Nearly 60% of sales leaders say buyers now arrive at the first conversation knowing significantly more about products, competitors and use cases than two years ago. That has not made buying easier. Nearly a quarter say internal consensus on the buyer’s side has become harder, as each stakeholder brings their own research and priorities.
In other words, the seller’s job is shifting from informing buyers to helping an informed and sometimes divided buying group build enough confidence to decide. That is a human skill, and it is the one most organizations are investing in least.
What the Leaders Are Doing Differently
The more AI-advanced organizations in the survey are twice as likely to report improved conversion (23% versus 11%) and more likely to be growing revenue at double-digit rates (69% versus 42%). Three habits stand out. They measure AI adoption properly: 81% of all respondents have AI adoption goals, but only 36% have targets and tracking in place. They check that AI is actually embedded before raising headcount or quota. And they redirect the hours AI saves into more customer-facing time rather than more internal work.
What This Means for Your 2027 Sales Kickoff
Don’t make it a tool demo
Your sellers have been shown the AI tools. The data says the tools are saving admin time, not winning deals. A kickoff that spends its prime slots on features is solving the part of the problem that is already moving. Put the stage time into what the tools are not yet doing.
Teach the business case
With 51% of leaders saying buyers want customized proof of ROI before they commit, the most valuable session you can program may be on building a business case and guiding a buying committee to consensus. That is where a speaker with real selling experience earns their fee. See sales performance and mindset speakers and negotiation speakers.
Address the quota increase honestly
Nine in ten organizations are raising expectations per seller. How that number is introduced at the kickoff shapes whether people treat it as a stretch or as unfair. Our companion piece on setting 2027 goals covers new research on exactly that, and our earlier analysis of quota attainment falling to 42% explains why the distribution matters more than the average.
Plan the follow-through before the event
A kickoff is an expensive one-day investment in behavior that has to last all year. Our breakdown of what a 100-rep kickoff costs and how fast the content fades shows why reinforcement belongs in the plan from the start. And with rep turnover already elevated, a kickoff that leaves sellers feeling set up to fail is a retention risk, not just a missed opportunity.
Book a speaker who has carried a number
Sellers can tell within minutes whether the person on stage has done the job. Read why that matters in our feature on a sales leader who took ServiceTitan through its IPO, and browse the sales kickoff speakers roster.
